U.S. Confirms USS Mason Intercepted Houthi Missile, Denies Attack On Vessel Destiny
In the recent escalation of attacks in the Red Sea, the US Navy Destroyer USS Mason intercepted an approaching Houthi anti-ship missile, stated the US Central Command after the Houthis claimed that they targeted the destroyer.
The US forces also destroyed two drones, according to the Central Command.
Contrary to the Houthi claims, a US official told Reuters that there was no evidence of a recent attack on a vessel named “Destiny”.
The spokesperson assured that both the vessel and its crew were safe, with no reported incidents.
In a televised speech, the Houthis claimed responsibility for using “appropriate naval missiles” to attack the US Navy’s Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, USS Mason.
Additionally, they also claimed an attack on a vessel named Destiny.
However, the specifics of the incidents haven’t been disclosed yet.
In another incident, US Central Command forces intercepted and destroyed four uncrewed aerial systems at around 9 p.m. (Sanna Time) on May 15, 2024, in the Houthi-controlled area of Yemen.
The action was taken to protect and safeguard the freedom of navigation in crucial waters.
This is among the latest incidents as global shipping continues to be disrupted by Houthi operations in the Red Sea over the last several months.
Such disruptions have forced shipping firms to reroute through longer and more expensive routes.
Concerns are growing that these disruptions, along with the Israel-Hamas conflict, might further destabilise the Middle East.
The USS Mason has been deployed in the Red Sea region as part of a US-led coalition to prevent Houthi attacks on ships.
The successful interception of the anti-ballistic missile highlights the continued efforts to ensure maritime safety in the area.
The Houthis have targeted shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
