TotalEnergies has taken an important step toward promoting low-carbon marine fuels by delivering its first cargo of 100% biofuel, known as B100, to Singapore.

On August 5, TotalEnergies Marine Fuels successfully delivered 700 metric tons of used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME) to the Hyundai Glovis car carrier ship, Glovis Cosmos.

The delivery was made possible by the use of an IMO Type II chemical bunker tanker, MAPLE, owned by the Singapore-based Global Energy Group.

The biofuel, generated entirely from recycled cooking oil sourced in Southeast Asia, has been certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) standard.

The 100% biofuel delivery is remarkable as it is TotalEnergies’ first full supply of biofuel in Singapore, an important advancement over prior operations, which featured biofuel blends of up to 30% mixed with very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).

UCOME biodiesel, a second-generation waste-based fuel, can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 80% to 90%.

Louise Tricoire, Senior Vice President of Aviation and Marine Fuels at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm, stating that the operation demonstrates the company’s commitment to supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonization goals.

TotalEnergies has already delivered biofuel bunkers to France and the Amsterdam-Rotterdam-Antwerp (ARA) region.

The company estimates that annual marine biofuel demand in Singapore might double from 2023 levels to almost 1 million metric tons by 2025, compared to the 51.8 million tons of total bunker fuel demand reported last year.

The delivery is part of TotalEnergies’ overall plan to develop its low-carbon fuel supplies and help the maritime industry shift to more sustainable fuel alternatives.
