Ship Capsize Off Bataan Coast Causes Fuel Leak and Pollution Concerns

On Saturday morning, a vessel submerged off Mariveles, Bataan, leaking fuel into the sea, per the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

The PCG added that MV Hong Hai 189 reportedly capsized and sank about 400 years from the Sisiman Lighthouse based in Mariveles town at about 5:21 am on Saturday, prompting relevant authorities to start installations of oil spill booms in that area.

The sunken vessel leaked about 30 to 50 litres of fuel and other mixed substances into the sea, PCG added, also observing no additional traces of an oil leak in nearby waters.

The Marine Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU) personnel and the PCG Station Bataan have been monitoring the scene for further measures.

The submerging occurred two months after the oil tanker dubbed MT Princess Empress had sunk off the Oriental Mindoro last February, leaking nearly 800,000 litres of industrial fuel into the sea.

Damages resulting from the Mindoro oil spill have hit P3.88 billion, with the number of impacted families going up to about 40,000, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) stated.
