A rescue operation was underway off Barcelona for two people missing after Spanish fishing vessel El Fairell sunk on 2 nautical miles southeast off the Spainish city.
Spanish fishing trawler,, El Fairell, capsized earlier this week after colliding with Russian tanker Midvolga-2. Reports said the vessel sunk sunk to a depth of about 160 meters off the Port of Barcelona.
According to local authorities, two crew members of the fishing vessel, a 34-year old man from Morocco and 37-year old one from Senegal, are still missing while the remaining crew members were rescued by the merchant vessel.
However, the Russian tanker Midvo did not suffer any damages and none of the crew was injured due to the accident. Reports said the 140m-long vessel was en route to Egypt while it met wth the accident.
Coordinated by the Maritime Captaincy of Barcelona, the rescue operation involved a rescue vessel , Clara Campoamor, and an underwater robot for the inspection of the fishing boat.
Clara Campoamor Ship, the multipurpose vessels for Maritime Rescue, features dynamic positioning system and also equipped for the work of divers, auxiliary equipment and communications center, while ROV Comanche offers a high capacity of intervention in difficult conditions of sea and current.
In addition, helicopters and maritime patrol boats were also part of the operation, maritime officials in Barcelona said.
Meanwhile, local authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and the Maritime Captain of Barcelona has instructed the Midvolga 2 to remain in the port until the causes of the accident are established.
