Russian Missile Strike Damages Ukraine’s Odesa Port Infrastructure, 6 Dead & 11 Injured

A Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s Odesa port infrastructure has killed six and injured eleven people, of which four were in serious condition on October 09, 2024, per the local officials.
The attack, the third in the region in the last four days, targeted the southern port city of Chornomorsk.
Oleh Kiper, the Odesa Regional Governor, confirmed the deaths and injuries in a Telegram post, saying that all of the injured people were Ukrainian.
Emergency services are providing medical care to the victims, with several believed to be in critical condition.
The missile attack also damaged the Shui Spirit, a containership flying the Panamanian flag, per Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba.
Officials believe that Russia launched the attack to disrupt Ukraine’s grain corridor, which was established after Moscow withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal earlier this year.
Kiper said in a third-party report that the enemy is trying to disrupt the Ukrainian grain corridor, killing civilians and destroying crucial infrastructure.
The attack has taken place after a series of missile strikes on other vessels in the region. A few days ago, a Russian missile struck a Palau-flagged vessel in the Odesa port, killing one Ukrainian and injuring five foreign nationals.
In another incident on Sunday, a missile struck a Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged ship loaded with corn in the port of Pivdennyi.
Since the end of the Black Sea grain deal, cargo ships have been forced to take a different route, passing close to Ukraine’s Black Sea coastline through Romanian waters en route to Turkey.
Ukrainian officials have urged international organizations to take action, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha pleading with global leaders to condemn the attacks and protect freedom of navigation.
Russian authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the latest attack.
