Pirates kidnapped seven Russians and one Ukrainian national after attacking a cargo ship off Nigeria’s coast on Tuesday, the Reuters news agency reported, quoting from Russian Embassy’s Official Twitter handle.
The general cargo vessel named BBC Caribbean is managed by Briese Schiffahrts, a German based company.
Nigerian authorities were asked to assist in locating the abducted people on Tuesday by the Russian embassy.
No comment were received from the Nigerian navy or police.
Pavel Fedulov, the director of a Briese Schiffahrts subsidiary in St Petersburg said “The armed pirates approached (the vessel) in a boat, captured the crew and left on the boat at the direction of the Nigerian shores”; which was reported by a Russian news organisation, RBC.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs Russia said that no firearms were used during the attack.
Some of the world’s most dangerous pirates have emerged from militant groups in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta, according to Security experts.
As a way to make more money, pirates have started abducting crew for ransom after the oil prices glut.
In a separate pirate attack near Bonny Island, the Nigerian navy had rescued 21 crew members of oil tanker, the MT Gaz Providence on Wednesday.
