Videos: Tanker Vessel Explosion Leaves Deck Officer Dead & 4 Injured
An explosion followed by fire on an oil tanker was witnessed on the Chao Phraya River on Sunday. The Marine Department mentioned on Monday that the investigation regarding the matter picked speed. It was highlighted that no leakage was found from the oil tanker.
The oil tanker, Ampar 8, was loaded with about 3.2 million litres of crude oil. On Sunday, it loaded the oil from Koh Sichang in Chon Buri to a Bangchak refinery pier in Bangkok.
A blast followed by fire near the ship’s bow sent out thick smoke into the air as it went upstream in Samut Prakan from the Gulf of Thailand, formerly Gulf Of Siam. A crew member was killed and one more was injured.
The oil tanker had been leased from Ayudhya Development Leasing by Grace Ocean Marine Co for transporting the oil.
Sompong Jirasirilert, the deputy director-general of the department, said that the crew members were questioned on Monday. Grace Ocean Marine was ordered to show a plan regarding how it will offload the oil cargo from the damaged vessel.
On Sunday, the fire had started raging at about 1.50 pm.
Mr. Sompong mentioned that Prasit Supatthawan, 43, the dead crewman was the vessel’s deputy captain. The injured crew member was Natchaphitsanupong Maneam, 26. The captain and 11 other crew members on board remained uninjured.
