5-Tons Of Oil Spilled During Bunkering Between Bulk Carrier & Tanker Off Changi
An oil spill occurred off Changi, Singapore, during a bunkering operation involving the Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier Ines Corrado and an authorized bunker tanker.
The incident occurred at about 5:40 PM on October 28, halting bunkering operations immediately.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) was notified of the spill and dispatched response vessels to the scene, which arrived around 5:50 p.m.
Authorities instantly sprayed dispersants to reduce the spill’s impact. During the operation, an estimated five tonnes of oil spilled.
MPA has since confirmed that the oil spill from the receiving bulk carrier Ines Corrado has stopped.
No oil was spotted at sea near the area or along the shore by 8 a.m. the next morning.
In response to the spill, a Current Buster has been deployed near Changi to recover any oil visible in the water. Malaysian authorities have also been informed to look for any oil sightings.
Additionally, government agencies have been alerted to monitor the shoreline for any signs of oil, ensuring a coordinated response to protect the maritime environment.
Fortunately, there has been no disruption to navigational traffic in the the area, allowing operations to continue unaffected.
The MPA has initiated an investigation into the cause of the incident.
