NYK Invests In Cutting-Edge MAN ES Engines For Four LNG Carriers

Japanese shipping major Nippon Yusen Kaisha (abbreviated NYK) has reportedly ordered eight advanced MAN B&W ME-GA engines via a German manufacturer named MAN Energy Solutions (abbreviated MAN ES) for four LNG carriers, each measuring 174,000 cubic meters. Per MAN ES, this order further entails 4x2x5G70ME-GA Mk. 10.5 engines will feature the firm’s proprietary exhaust gas recirculation bypass (abbreviated EGRBP) emissions-reduction tech.

NYK currently has four 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers being constructed at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. in South Korea. The vessels are likely to be done in sequence in 2027. The vessel will measure about 289.9 meters in length and 46.1 meters in breadth. Besides ME-GA engines, the LNG carriers will boast a shaft generator and an air lubrication system (abbreviated ALS), making them more eco-friendly than the conventional LNG carriers, per NYK.

Man Energy Solutions reportedly has logged over 278 ME-GA engine orders from May 2021. Seven of these have entered service with 14 ME-GA engines on board, per Thomas S. Hansen, the Head of Promotion and Customer Support with the company.

The firm developed the engine for seamless application to contemporary designs of LNG carriers, and ME-GA orders have exclusively been dedicated to this segment. Demands for the engine have been intense since its introduction, mainly owing to its accompaniment by the firm’s self-developed EGR system that comes proven by over a decade of in-service, optimization, and operational experience, stated Bjarne Foldager, the Head of Two-Stroke Business with MAN Energy Solutions.
