MSC To Reflag 12 Container Ships In India As The Country Passes New Maritime Regulations

Mediterranean Shipping Company is planning to register some of its ships under the Indian Flag.

This development comes amidst India’s efforts to expand its maritime influence in the world, for which the country has also passed maritime regulations and policy initiatives to increase maritime trade on Indian-registered ships.

Other carriers like Maersk and CMA CGM have also recently reflagged their vessels in India.

MSC CEO Soren Soft announced this news during India Maritime Week 2025. He was also a part of the Global Maritime CEO Roundtable, chaired by indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Toft stated on social media that India is a major country for MSC with strong recorded growth across shipping, ports and logistics. He added that MSC would deploy 12 ships under the Indian flag, furthering their partnership and supporting India’s maritime goals.

India is taking initiatives to boost its shipping sector, including incentives for shipbuilding, strict cabotage regulations on inter-port container movement and revised ship age rules.

India’s containership registry is now witnessing tremendous growth. After CMA CGM transferred several 2600 TEU ships and Maersk reflagged two 1800 TEU ships, MSC will become India’s 3rd largest private shipowner.

The state-run Shipping Corporation of India is also expanding its fleet through acquisitions, showing India’s commitment to building a stronger and self-reliant maritime industry.
