MPA & NYK Partner To Improve Maritime Decarbonization, Digitalization & Manpower Development
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to strengthen their collaboration and speed up efforts in maritime decarbonization, digitalization, and manpower development.
The CEO of MPA, Mr. Teo Eng Dih and President and Group Chief Executive of NYK, Mr. Takaya Soga, signed the memorandum of understanding on July 2, 2024.
The collaboration intends to be consistent with the International Maritime Organization’s updated Greenhouse Gas Strategy 2023, the Paris Agreement, and international energy and climate targets.
MPA and NYK will collaborate on various initiatives to promote a sustainable maritime industry.
A planned strategy ensures the safe use of maritime fuels such as biofuels, methanol, and low and zero-carbon ammonia.
The collaboration will prioritize developing maritime training programs for seafarers, focusing on ammonia-fueled vessels and other sustainability capabilities.
Furthermore, the alliance will support leadership training for local professionals to help the industry transition to alternate low or zero-carbon fuels.
Mr. Teo Eng Dih, MPA’s Chief Executive, stated that the MOU marks a significant milestone in MPA and NYK’s long-standing collaboration.
Singapore, a major bunkering and maritime hub port, is introducing alternative fuels and enhancing its workforce.
MPA is excited to collaborate with NYK to realize their combined potential and develop solutions that can be scaled up to help the entire maritime industry transition to smart and sustainable shipping.
Mr. Takaya Soga, President and CEO of NYK, added that NYK has been proactively working on decarbonization, digitalization and maritime human resource development to create a sustainable maritime industry.
NYK has also initiated the establishment of an ammonia-related company, including bunkering projects, in support of the Singaporean government’s fuel ammonia strategy.
Singapore is the world’s largest hub port for transhipment and bunkering, making it an essential player in the maritime industry.
The MOU will enhance MPA and NYK’s cooperation and contribute to the maritime industry’s long-term development.
