Monjasa, a global marine fuels provider, collaborated with Fuel and Marine Oil Corp (FAMOIL) to complete the first ISCC-certified biofuel supply on the Pacific coast of South America.

This historic operation occurred on 22 February 2024 in the Port of Callao, Peru, where 510 tonnes of B30 marine biofuels were delivered to the Cargill-operated dry bulk carrier Infinity Sky.

This operation is significant for more than its immediate impact because it establishes a scalable second-generation marine biofuels supply chain in the region.

It is part of Monjasa’s larger efforts to prepare for the evolving marine fuels mix and help the shipping industry fulfil the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2050 climate change targets.

The B30 Biofuel blend delivered during this operation comprised 30% Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME) and 70% Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), offering vessel operators a low carbon fuel choice.

Monjana’s existing biofuel activities in Cartagena, Colombia, paved the way for its expansion into Peru, demonstrating its commitment to providing sustainable solutions throughout the region.

While the marine biofuels industry is still in its early growth phases, Monjasa actively engages with shipowners and operators to arrange spot and contract-based supply in Peru and the booming Port of Callao.

Jonas Bruslund, Monjasa’s Trading Director for the Americas, emphasised the importance of increasing access to biofuels, stating that they expect more shipowners to transition from biofuel trial runs to more frequent supplies.

Thus, making these fuels accessible to more people is an initial step in that development.

Collaboration with major partners, such as FAMOIL and Cargill, was critical to the operation’s success.

The construction of a second-generation biofuels supply chain demonstrates Monjasa and FAMOIL’s commitment to providing customised blends based on shipowner requests.

This partnership accommodates VLSFO and HSFO-based biofuel blends and pure biodiesel B100 to meet the industry’s diversified needs.

Monjasa guarantees transparency and sustainability across the supply chain as an ISCC-certified partner.

This certification enables the easy identification of feedstock used in biofuel production and gives data on greenhouse gas emissions, allowing shipowners to make educated decisions that align with environmental goals.

Monjasa intends to set up additional regional biofuel supply centres, thus speeding up the marine industry’s switch to greener fuels.

The successful completion of the first ISCC-certified biofuels supply along South America’s Pacific Coast marks a significant step toward a more sustainable maritime sector.
