Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has become the first Japanese company to join the Book and Claim Community (BCC) board, an environmental initiative to reduce carbon emissions in international logistics.

The BCC is working on establishing the “Book and Claim” method. This system aims to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in global logistics through collaboration and information sharing among companies and organizations committed to environmental sustainability.

MOL’s appointment to the board follows its pioneering efforts in decarbonizing the shipping industry, mainly through its “Carbon Inset” initiative, which allocates GHG emission reductions as tradable tokens.

MOL has now joined other industry leaders on the board, including Meta, NORDEN, and UPS. The BCC’s founding board members include Amazon, Deloitte, DHL Group, Microsoft, Shell, and World Energy.

The initiative aligns with MOL’s longstanding commitment to sustainability. According to company sources, MOL plans to use its shipping expertise to help decarbonize international logistics and partner with other board members to promote further developments in this area.

MOL’s involvement also aligns with the MOL Group’s overall corporate objective of “sustaining people’s lives and ensuring a prosperous future,” as stated in its “MOL Sustainability Plan.”

Through this plan, the company aims to address crucial sustainability-related issues, creating long-term value for stakeholders while expanding as a global leader in the maritime sector.

MOL’s involvement is expected to benefit the BCC significantly, given the company’s expertise in green shipping solutions and innovative carbon management practices.

The Book and Claim methodology is a promising way for companies to achieve evident reductions in their carbon footprints as decarbonization becomes a priority across industries.
