Malta Becomes Largest Ship Registry In Europe & Ranks 6th Globally

Malta has become the largest ship registry in Europe after recording over 10,000 ship registrations by the end of the first quarter of the year.
It is the 6th largest in the world, per the Transport Ministry, which added that it holds the top position globally when it comes to superyachts.
The Ministry said it will improve and streamline the process of registration by introducing a digital system.
From June 1, 2025, Transport Malta will provide electronic certificates to ship and yacht owners with vessels registered under the Maltese Flag.
Chris Bonett, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, said that this would make Malta competitive in the maritime sector that demands efficiency and transparency.
Transport Malta Chief Executive Officer Kurt Farrugia stated that this effort is an extension of the introduction of e-certificates for seafarers in 2021, and to date, more than 93,000 digital documents have been issued.
Malta is a leading maritime hub, and several factors are responsible for its becoming one of the biggest ship registries in the world.
It is strategically located in the centre of the Mediterranean, has natural harbours and offers several maritime services including shipbuilding, maintenance, repairs, bunkering, ship supplies, towage and not to forget, tax benefits.
Malta is also being recognised as a port of entry into the European Union.
