Maersk’s New Ammonia Vessel Design Gets AiP From Classification Societies
A. P. Møller-Mærsk’s recently developed design for an ammonia-fuelled 3,500 TEU container vessel has earned approval in principle from classification societies Lloyd’s Register and the American Bureau of Shipping.
The design initiative, headed by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, involved Deltamarin, MAN Energy Solutions, and Eltronic FuelTech.
To unleash the essence of sustainable ammonia as an alternative as well as a low-emissions marine fuel, the need of the hour is to address the safety and security issues on the vessel and help enable a healthy working environment for seafarers and the people at ports.
The AIP of the new vessel design is a crucial milestone on the journey, as it reflects that the safety criteria for the application of ammonia as the primary fuel is within the tolerable levels of industry safety management practices, mentioned Claus W. Graugaard, the CTO, Onboard Vessel Solutions with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.
ABS and LR granting the AIP parallel is a testimony to the robustness of the design and to the iterative risk assessment and systematic risk management intelligence that has gone into it.
The development initiatives have been possible because the project partners have contributed to innovative thinking and a willingness to share knowledge.
The collaboration is the quickest way of co-creating the rules and innovative solutions needed, the Graugaard added.
When awarding AIP, the classification societies typically perform a novel tech evaluation to check the fundamental features of the vessel design and general compliance with the associated rules and regulations.
Next, the remarks that were raised regarding the design will be addressed, and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping will continue leading this work.
They are looking into extending this project into the second phase with partners, including a charterer and a ship owner.
Safety remains a fundamental aspect of the widespread adoption of ammonia as a primary marine fuel.
Andy McKeran, Lloyd’s Register’s chief commercial officer, said the AIP demonstrates a cross-sector intention to make ambition a reality.
Through past collaborations, including the collaborative study with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and the LR Maritime Decarbonisation Hub into the Quantitative Risk Assessment for ammonia vessel design, LR has continued building on the expertise as a reliable adviser to the maritime value chain, helping us put risk mitigation for ammonia vessels at the heart of the AIP process.
