Maersk Takes Evergreen To Court For Suez Canal Blockage Issue

On February 13, Maersk revealed that they have filed for compensation against rival company Evergreen for the loss of revenue due to ship delays caused by the Suez Canal blocking resulting from the grounding of Ever Given ship in 2021.

The ship had run aground in the vital waterway in March 2021, stranding vessels along the way for more than a week. Ultimately, it was salvaged by the canal authorities after a massive dredging effort.

Maersk has asked for compensation from the Japanese owner of Ever Given and the management company of the ship Bernhard Schulte Management. The case was filed in the Danish Maritime and Commercial High Court. 

Although Maersk hasn’t revealed the exact amount of loss, it has faced, according to the ShippingWatch, some 50 Maersk containerships were stuck in the Suez Canal logjam. The company is seeking millions of dollars in compensation for delays in delivering customers’ goods.
