Lloyd’s Maritime Academy Launches In-Depth Ballast Water Management Course

Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, the experts in life-long learning for maritime professionals, has launched its first ever, an in-depth online course focusing on the Ballast Water Management Convention. The ‘Certificate of Ballast Water Management’ will run as a 12-week distance learning course and will start on the 28th March 2019. Ted Bailey, Head of Digital Learning at Lloyd’s Maritime Academy comments: “This course is a great addition to our international portfolio. Ballast water management is hugely topical right now and is set to significantly impact the future of the shipping industry. Clear, insightful guidance on the implications of the Convention and how it will affect shipping operations is still needed – this course will provide delegates with all they need to know.”

Split into six modules, the course specifically focuses on ballast water management, the Convention and why it’s needed. It will highlight how the environmental concerns are addressed, as well as the role different job functions can and will play in the process of managing ballast water.

Course Director for the Certificate of Ballast Water Management, Niels Bjørn Lindberg Mortensen explains: “Starting in September 2019, 40,000+ existing ships around the world will, over the next five years, need to have designed, integrated and commissioned a ballast water management system. This course is a fantastic opportunity for shipping companies to get under the skin of ballast water management and better understand the different options and methodologies available. There are many pitfalls to avoid and I’m looking forward to engaging with delegates to impart my knowledge and expertise and help them successfully navigate through this complex regulation.”

This course will be delivered entirely via distance learning. Online forums to network with other students will also be made available, as well as support from the Course Director throughout the duration of the programme.
