Largest U.S. LNG Bunker Barge Of Its Kind Delivered
Crowley has officially accepted delivery of the Progress, the largest LNG Bunker Barge that complies with the Jones Act.
The construction of the vessel was completed at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
The 416-foot-long Progress has a capacity of 12,000 cubic meters (approximately 3.17 million gallons) and will soon be operational at the Port of Savannah, Georgia.
Shell NA LNG, LLC will chart the vessel, which will provide a new refuelling option for the region’s LNG dual-fuel vessels.
Crowley Shipping’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, James C. Fowler, highlighted the barge’s impact on the industry and that the LNG Bunker barge Progress sets a new standard for capability and quality in serving the shipping industry’s energy needs.
LNG helps ocean carriers move toward a lower emission future by providing a reliable and safe solution.
The Progress, designed by Crowley’s engineering services team, has a transformational design with two 6,000 cubic meter bilobe Type C tanks that can transport LNG at -163°C.
It uses advanced technology developed by Crowley and Shell to deliver LNG to various types of containment systems.
Jan Allman, Vice President and General Manager of Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, commended the achievement and stated that Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding continues to be an industry leader in LNG bunkering barges.
The Progress surpasses the previous two record-holding barges, Clean Canaveral and Clean Everglades, both of which have a capacity of 5,500 cubic meters and were built by Bay Shipbuilding.
LNG has been recognized as the lowest-carbon fuel available for large-scale shipping, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23% compared to very/ultra-low sulfur fuel oils.
