Israel’s Transport Ministry Seeking To Clarify COSCO’s Position On Shipping To Israel

On Tuesday, Israel’s Transport Ministry declared that it is seeking to clarify COSCO’s decision to pause shipping activities toward Israel. This week, Israeli media reported that COSCO had halted shipping to Israel. The firm has, however, refused to comment.

The Administration of Shipping and Ports has been collaborating with relevant parties to validate the Chinese shipping firm’s announcement to halt sailing to Israel, the country’s Transport Ministry mentioned in its response to a query raised by Reuters.

Shipping channels in the Red Sea have already been heavily disrupted by the attacks launched by the Iranian-backed Houthi militants based in Yemen in sympathy for the Hamas militants, the Iranian-supported Palestinian Islamist group raging a war against Israel in the Gaza Strip.

Israel’s port of Eilat, located on the Red Sea, has also witnessed a significant drop in activity from when the Houthi attacks started in November 2023. However, that has had negligible impact on the domestic market as the nation takes care of most of the trade via the Mediterranean.
