Indonesian Rescuers Search For Missing Cargo Ship With 12 Crew Off Papua
Indonesian rescuers are intensifying their search efforts for a cargo ship that went missing last week in the easternmost region of Papua.
The ship carrying 12 crew members has been missing since it departed from Timika on a mission to deliver equipment for the construction of telecommunication towers and other infrastructure to Yahukimo, a highland area.
The aim was to support the communications ministry by establishing important facilities in a difficult location.
However, the vessel lost communication two days into its voyage, raising concerns and prompting a search operation.
On July 20, 2024, the search and rescue agency dispatched 150 personnel and two navy ships in search of the missing vessel.
I Wayan Suyatna, the head of the local rescue squad, highlighted the importance of the search operation.
Despite an exhaustive search, the cause of the ship’s disappearance remains unknown.
Fadhilah Mathar, a communications ministry official, acknowledged the vessel’s intended mission and expressed enthusiasm for a swift resolution.
As the search continues, authorities are focused on finding the missing cargo ship and ensuring the safety of its crew members.
