India’s Largest Deepwater Transshipment Port Welcomes its First Container Ship
The Chief Minister of Kerela, Pinarayi Vijayan welcomed the arrival of the Cargo Ship called San Fernando at the Vizhinjam International Seaport on Friday.
The event was held in the presence of the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbanda Sonowal and other state leaders and dignitaries.
The vessel had berthed at the port on Thursday, marking the arrival of the first container ship at the country’s newly built and largest deepwater transshipment port.
The facility is being developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited, the biggest port developer in India and a part of the Adani Group.
A large crowd gathered to witness the 300 m long ship at the Port, being developed under the public-private model with an investment of about 8867 crores.
It has the most advanced port equipment, automation and IT systems, making it India’s first Semi-Automated Port which will be fully opened in September or October of this year.
It was scheduled to be commissioned in 2019 but was delayed because of land acquisition issues.
