Indian Seafarer Dies On Bulk Carrier, Body Awaits Repatriation

Oman Ship Management Company S.A.O.C. and V.Ships Crew Management, India regret to report the sad death of a much-valued seafarer on bulk carrier, Jabal Alkawr, while on passage from Malaysia to South Africa.

Bejoy Ressel Sequeira, aged 37 years, who was Chief Cook on the vessel, passed away on September 17, having joined in March 2021. An autopsy carried out in Mauritius on September 30 showed that the Chief Cook passed away as a result of Pulmonary Embolism, the body being free of infection or any contagious diseases.

Bejoy Ressel Sequeira first reported feeling unwell on September 9 and was immediately isolated in his cabin as per Master’s instructions, who then immediately contacted the Managers and the International Radio Medical centre ( CIRM) for advice and treatment.

Reports and updates were then sent to the CIRM every 24 hours for further advice in line with Company protocols.

The Company reviewed options for diverting the vessel to obtain further medical support, but as the vessel was through the Sunda Strait and into the Indian Ocean, the best option was identified as Mauritius.

Tragically the Chief Cook passed away on September 17 and the vessel anchored in Port Louis on September 20th.

In Port Louis, the Master and 2nd Officer tested positive for Covid 19, but the 2nd officer was later tested negative and the Master tested negative three days later.

An official police and Flag investigation was instigated on board and the vessel given the all clear to resume passage.

At all times the mortal remains of Bejoy Sequeira were treated with the utmost respect in a special area with cold conditions in line with the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide.

It is hoped that all the necessary Consular clearance will be provided by October 7 and the body repatriated to his loved ones in India.
