Indian Navy Stands Committed Against Piracy In Indian Ocean Region
Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of Naval Staff, spoke about the Indian Navy’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Admiral Kumar stated on Monday (19 February) that the Navy is ready to respond firmly to any acts of piracy, adding that no vessel, regardless of size or kind, will be spared from strict action.
Admiral Kumar addressed the media during the inauguration of a Nibe Defence and Aerospace production factory in Chakan, Pune district, emphasising India’s large deployment of naval forces in the Indian Ocean. Additionally, extra warships have been stationed off the coast of Somalia to combat piracy threats effectively.
The Indian Navy has increased its efforts in anti-drone operations, particularly in the North Arabian Sea and the Red Sea, to protect the lives of Indians and anyone in danger at sea. Admiral Kumar highlighted the Navy’s unwavering dedication to its duty to help those in need, regardless of nationality.
Admiral Kumar emphasised the importance of the pirate issue, stating that the Navy, in partnership with allied fleets, would use all available resources to combat piracy successfully. He added that the Indian Navy, as the most significant resident naval power in the Indian Ocean Region, will not allow any threats to the region’s security, stability, or safety.
The Chief of Naval Staff reaffirmed the Navy’s position on piracy, emphasising that it would not be supported and that perpetrators would face serious repercussions. He also highlighted the need for the Maritime Anti-pirate Act, 2022, to comprehensively improve the Navy’s ability to confront pirate threats.
Responding to questions on recent rescue operations, Admiral Kumar described how the Indian destroyer INS Sumitra successfully recovered 19 Pakistani crew members from a fishing vessel assaulted by pirates off the east coast of Somalia. He highlighted that the Indian Navy, driven by humanitarian ideals, will aid anyone in distress at sea, regardless of nationality.
