Indian Navy Signs 2,270 Crore Deal With BEL For 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems
The Indian Navy is set to procure 11 designed, indigenously developed, and manufactured Shakti electronic warfare systems from Bharat Electronic Limited (abbreviated the BEL).
The Defence Ministry on Tuesday (February 13) signed a deal with Hyderabad-based BEL in New Delhi for procuring about 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems with associated equipment as well as accessories for the Indian Navy under the Buy (Indian- IDDM) category at a cost of about Rs 2269.54 crore.

The assignment will help yield the employment of two and almost a half-lakh man-days over four years with 155+ partners participating, including the MSMEs, advancing the notion of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”, the Defence Ministry mentioned in a statement. Advanced Electronic Warfare (abbreviated the EW) System “Shakti” has reportedly been developed and designed by the Hyderabad-based Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (abbreviated as DLRL), a lab of the Defence Research and Development Organization.
The system has reportedly been designed exclusively for the Capital Warships of the Indian Navy for the detection, classification, interception, identification, and jamming of modern and conventional radar. The Shakti EW System can intercept electronic emissions and implement measures in dense electromagnetic zones.
The Shakti EW system will offer an electronic layer of defence against modern radars and anti-ship missiles to ensure electronic survivability and dominance in the maritime battlefield. The system will replace the earlier generation EW Systems of India’s Navy.
The system has reportedly been seamlessly integrated with the wideband Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and electronic countermeasures (ECM) to defend India’s Navy Ships against several ongoing missile attacks—the system ESM aids in spotting accurate directions and interceptions of advanced radars. The system has built-in radar fingerprinting and data recording replay features for post-mission analysis.
