India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will commission India’s 2nd nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, the INS Arighat or S-3, at an event in Visakhapatnam.

The event will be attended by Chief Of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, head of the Indian strategic command, Vice Admiral Suraj Berry and top DRDO officials.

The 6000-tonne submarine will embark on a long-range patrol of the Indo-Pacific armed with 750 km range nuclear ballistic missiles K-15.

Another submarine INS Aridaman or S4 will be commissioned next year. India will have two SSBNs, INS Arihant and INS Arighat which will patrol the high seas as part of the nation’s triad and second-strike capability.

The Indian Navy has also approached the government to approve 2 nuclear-powered armed submarines or SSNs which can remain underwater for months.

Diesel-electric attack submarines, or SSKs, need to surface frequently to change their batteries.

Given India’s location in the Indo-Pacific region, the two submarines will provide huge strategic leverage and act as a deterrent. Both the submarines were powered by a nuclear reactor and nuclear missile built in India.

INS Arighat is said to be more technologically advanced than INS Arihant.

After the launch of the S-4 SSBN, India will launch a much bigger class of submarines, which will carry a 3000 km range of nuclear ballistic missiles with more missile tubes.

The Indian Navy will also commission guided missile stealth destroyer INS Surat, stealth guided missile frigate INS Taragiri, and the sixth of the Kalveri class attack submarines INS Vagsheer – in the next few months.

Three more Kalveri class submarines will be ordered with Mumbai’s Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd, this year itself.
