India Planning For Another Indigenous Aircraft Carrier After INS Vikrant

Admiral R Hari Kumar, the Chief of Naval Staff, made a huge announcement that the Navy is eyeing a repeat order for the country’s Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (abbreviated IAC) on inducting INS Vikrant and also preparing a solid case for it.

Speaking to reporters on sidelines of the launch of the advanced stealth frigate dubbed Mahendragiri; he said that with indigenously constructed INS Vikrant, the Cochin Shipyard has gathered expertise in building an IAC.

Work is in progress for the third aircraft carrier that is going to be another repeat of INS Vikrant. There is massive expertise generated in terms of the construction of an aircraft carrier. The idea is to have an IAC, follow-on, and a repeat order being made. A case for the same is in preparation, per Admiral Kumar.

India right now has two aircraft carriers. These are INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya. The first-ever IAC was commissioned in September 2022 by the Indian Navy.
