Hybrid Passenger Ship “Hanaria” Receives First Hydrogen Fuel Cell System From Yanmar

The first hybrid passenger ship in Japan, the HANARIA, received its newly commercialised marine hydrogen fuel cell system from Yanmar Power Technology successfully.

This accomplishment is a significant step toward the maritime industry’s carbon-neutral goal.

With the assistance of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and other investors, MOTENA-Sea’s passenger ship, HANARIA, now has an electric propulsion system installed on board.

This cutting-edge system, entirely designed by Yanmar PT, includes propulsion equipment, biodiesel generators, batteries, power management, and remote monitoring, among other components.

The system’s most important feature is that it can solely run on batteries and hydrogen fuel cells, leading to zero emissions, reduced power source noise and vibrations, and preserved the environment.

It also eliminates the foul odour of exhaust gas, enhancing the customer’s overall experience.

In August 2023, Yanmar PT unveiled its marine hydrogen fuel cell system, a significant step toward its commitment to the YANMAR GREEN CHALLENGE 2050.

Yanmar hopes to increase sustainability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating environmental effects.

The launch of this cutting-edge technology aligns with Yanmar’s mission to assist clients in their efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

In the future, Yanmar PT suggests installing the maritime hydrogen fuel cell system in various ships, including passenger, cargo, and work ships located in coastal regions with reasonably easy access to hydrogen refuelling.
