Hutchison Ports BEST Wins Prestigious Lean And Green Award For Reducing Emissions
Hutchison Ports BEST has received the prestigious Lean and Green award, with a 4-star rating for its impressive efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in logistics processes.
The recognition shows the terminal’s commitment to sustainability and places it among Europe’s green logistics leaders. In 2023, BEST reduced its emissions by 58.73% compared to 2021.
The reduction was made possible by implementing several initiatives, including using electricity from renewable sources, installing solar panels, optimising terminal operations, upgrading to LED lighting, and introducing electric and hybrid machinery.
Lean and Green is Europe’s largest platform for reducing supply chain emissions, helping companies meet the Paris Climate Summit’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
In Spain, the award is presented by the Association of Manufacturers and Distributors (AECOC).
BEST has also taken steps to reduce emissions from ships docked at its terminal by using onshore power supply (OPS), which removes greenhouse gases during their stay.
The company said that this measure also helps improve air quality.
BEST CEO Guillermo Belcastro described the award as a recognition of the team’s dedication to sustainability. He pointed out the terminal’s efforts to become the most eco-friendly in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean.
BEST aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions before 2040. The terminal has also reduced emissions per 20-foot container by 67% compared to conventional terminals.
BEST, Hutchison Ports Group’s first semi-automated terminal, is one of the most advanced port developments in the Mediterranean. The Hutchison Ports BEST has achieved the highest productivity rates in Europe since it opened in September 2012.
