Houthis Target Ships With Military Equipment At Haifa Port In A Joint Operation With Iraqi Forces
Yemen’s Houthi group claimed on Thursday that they had launched coordinated aerial strikes alongside an Iraqi force, targeting vessels in Israel’s Haifa Port, but Israeli military authorities promptly denied the claim.
According to the Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, the precise attacks were carried out using drones in retaliation for what he described as “massacres committed by the Israeli enemy in the Palestinian area of Rafah” in Gaza.
Saree’s statement was aired on the Houthi-affiliated al-Masirah TV.
The reported actions apparently targeted two ships carrying military supplies and another vessel that allegedly violated the Houthis’ restrictions on entering the port of Haifa in occupied Palestine (Israel).
The Houthi spokesperson warned of additional operations, signaling a potential escalation in tensions between the Yemeni rebel group and Israel.
Contrary to the Houthis’ claims, Israeli military sources told Xinhua that they were unfamiliar with such an incident.
Witnesses from Haifa-based companies confirmed that the port was operational, perhaps contradicting the Houthis’ claim of successful attacks.
Since November 2023, the Houthis, including the capital, Sanna, have been launching anti-ship ballistic missiles and drones at ships purportedly linked to Israel as they navigate the Red Sea.
These actions were described as an act of solidarity with Palestinians suffering in the Gaza Strip.
As the situation unfolds, concerns remain about the possibility of further escalation and the impact on maritime operations in the Red Sea region.
