Greek Frigate Deployed To Red Sea Mission To Protect Merchant Ships From Houthi Attacks
Greek frigate Hydra set sail for the waters of the Red Sea on Monday to take part in a mission to safeguard merchant vessels from attacks by the Yemeni Iran-led Houthis, per a defence ministry official. On Monday, the Greek government approved the nation’s participation in the EU naval mission dubbed Eunavfor Aspides in the waters of the Red Sea.
Several commercial shippers have reportedly diverted the vessels following some attacks by Houthis that control significant areas of Yemen and state that they are now acting in solidarity with the Palestinians as Hamas and Israel wage a terrifying war in Gaza.
The security council of Greece has approved a proposal by Nikos Dendias, the Defence Minister, to participate in the EU mission, as the government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis mentioned in their statement. The government has added that it was essential to take part in the mission as the attacks of the Houthis have disrupted the activities of the Greek-owned commercial vessels at the biggest port of the country, Piraeus, and many container vessels are no longer using it.
France, Germany, and Italy are participating in this EU mission, using the code ” Aspides ” derived from the Greek word meaning shields.
Participating nations are going to be mandated to protect commercial vessels and also intercept the nasty attacks, but not take part in the strikes against Houthis on land. Many Greece-owned merchant vessels have gotten hit off in Yemen since November 2023, suffering massive damages but zero casualties so far.
