A 42-year-old sailor, who is a native of Georgia, suffered what is suspected to be self-inflicted injuries on Tuesday and is currently undergoing treatment.
The injured, M Cochai, was employed as a motorman on MT Uzava, transporting cargo from the Marshall Islands.
It is understood that Cochai boarded the vessel and started his work on 28 July.
The vessel visited Argentina and departed from the Nicochea harbour.
The vessel hit the Chennai port with sunflower oil on 28 October and was gearing up to leave the port close to 8.
By 2 p.m., the ship crew discovered that Cochai was lying unconscious in a big pool of blood in the crew duty change room and alerted the ship captain, Antons Petrovs.
The Harbour police department opened an investigation. According to authorities, he is receiving treatment and is now stable.
