Fire Broke Out In The Engine Room Of A Ferry Off Kusu Island; No Injuries Reported

A fire broke out unexpectedly in the engine room of a ferry registered with Singapore off Kusu Island on Friday (5 May), prompting the transfer of passengers to another vessel.

The fire was reportedly put out by six members of the crew associated with QUEEN STAR 2, which was sailing to Batam from Singapore when the incident occurred.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (better known as the MPA) mentioned in a news release that it was alerted to the incident on Friday at 12.30 pm.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), MPA, and Police Coast Guard (PCG) deployed crafts immediately to offer assistance, mentioning the authority also adding that a tugboat was deployed to extend help and tow the ferry.

The 62 passengers on board, including Indonesians, Singaporeans, and Malaysians, were safely transferred to another vessel, the MERBAU ERA, sailing to Harbourfront Ferry Terminal, Singapore. The ship then headed to Batam, Indonesia, and reached safely with all passengers.
