A Cruise Ship with more than 200 people ran aground on the Danube River, close to the village of Garla Mare in Mehedince County, where the borders of Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia meet.

In this region, the level of the Danube River is low, according to media outlets.

The cruise ship had sailed from Turnu Magurele to Vienna with 180 passengers and 53 crew members.

In the Garla Mare area, the flow of the Danube had decreased significantly, around 2600 m3 compared to 3800 m3, which is what it should be at this time of year and the vessel got stuck in a sandbank.

Authorities took action and contacted the crew members and the passengers. They also gave provisions for many days, as it was not clear how long the situation would persist.

Fortunately, on Friday morning, the flow of the Danube increased and the ship continued its journey.
