Cruise Ship Returns To UK After 100 Passengers Injured In Dangerous Storm
A cruise vessel has returned to the UK after almost 100 guests got injured when caught up in a storm that hit the Bay of Biscay.
The Saga Cruises vessel, dubbed the Spirit of Discovery, was on a 14-night cruise journey from the UK to the Canary Islands as it was hit with poor weather conditions over the last week.
The Bay of Biscay storm had injured close to 100 guests. The injuries had been minor, but five individuals required medical aid, cruise major Saga informed BBC.
The Spirit of Discovery had veered to its left when the weather worsened.
The vessel’s crew decided to move to Portsmouth when the vessel’s propulsion safety system had been activated in the bad weather, making it veer all of a sudden to the left and bringing the ship to an unexpected halt, The Independent reported.
According to a Saga representative, most injuries occurred during the manoeuvre. The ship remained motionless until the situation improved. On Monday night, it returned to Portsmouth.
Per a spokesperson, the spirit of Discovery was tragically caught in the challenging weather conditions this past weekend when she commenced her return to the UK.
The ship was “safe at all times,” stated the spokeswoman. All were immediately treated by onboard medical personnel.
While the weather is plainly out of control, they wish to express sincere sympathies to all those affected, who are currently safely on their journey home in calmer waters, the statement added.
Saga Cruises has not revealed whether any injured individuals required extra medical care ashore.
