Crude Oil Tanker To Pay ₹88 Crore For Damaging Haldia Oil Jetty Or Face Arrest

The Calcutta High Court has reportedly ordered a crude oil tanker that flies the Liberian flag to pay about Rs. 88 crore or expect arrest.

This happened after a crane on that tanker impaired Haldia oil jetty’s arms. The court had been informed that this tanker was also trying to depart from the dock to avoid its legal liabilities.

Following the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Act of 2017, arresting a vessel refers to seizing it based on HC’s orders to secure any maritime claim, including vessel detainment.

The petition further claimed that owing to the tanker, the twin arms of the oil jetty that was responsible for tackling containers with fluid in them had been broken, and all kinds of operations at the jetty had to be halted. The petition also mentions that repairing these will take almost a year.

The relevant tanker authorities can try to avoid the arrest if they pay the cost of importing the new jetty arms and the yearly revenue loss brought about due to the damage. The court is going to revisit the case on 26 September.
