Chinese Aircraft Carrier Shandong Presence Detected Off Northern Taiwan

Taiwan stated on Thursday that it is monitoring a Chinese naval formation, which is led by Shandong Aircraft Carrier, as it crossed through the Taiwan Strait.

Shandong came into the strait separating Taiwan and the Chinese mainland on the afternoon of Wednesday as it sailed south to north along the west of the strait’s median line, the Defense Ministry of Taipei stated.

Last month, yet another naval formation headed by the same aircraft carrier came into the Pacific Ocean through the Bashi Channel that separates Taiwan from the Philippines.

Shandong was also found roughly 60 nautical miles or 110 km southeast of Taiwan when it entered the Western Pacific.

Taiwan has witnessed a rise in military and political pressure from China in the past few years. While China vows to seize the island nation by force if needed, Taiwan asserts its independence.

Shandong’s passage through the strategic Taiwan Strait occurred after Beijing said its troops were on high alert after Canadian and U.S warships crossed the waterway last week.

Shandong is China’s 2nd aircraft carrier and the first to be constructed indigenously. It was commissioned in 2019 and has been a part of several naval exercises and missions since then.
