Big Data And Artificial Intelligence Will Save Time And Money At Port Sector – Siport21

The maritime and port engineering company, Siport21, in cooperation with Instituto Tecnológico de Informática (ITI) have developed an algorithm to predict six degrees of freedom of a moored vessel at the port of A Coruna.

The outer port at Punta Langosteira in Galicia was built to increase capacity and move most sensitive goods out of the city. This port moves two million tonnes, a relevant part of a total 7.6 million of the port of A Coruña.

Hegemony of data

The continuous increase of both the load and the size of the vessels pushes the importance to coordinate the different port agents. An enormous quantity of massive data is changing the sector in order to optimize time consume, foster growth of business and improve the economic performance.

This trend is aligned with the collaboration between Siport21 and ITI to develop advanced algorithms to predict the motions in six degrees of freedom of moored vessels at the port of Langosteira.

Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

Precise prediction of moored vessels motions under the action of waves, wind and maritime traffic considering their specific characteristics is vital to establish operation and safety conditions.

Siport21 and ITI have achieved this predictive model using massive data processing and powerful statistical techniques available to technology enablers: Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

In order to check the results, two 3D models were developed aimed at representing the ship movements, along with a twin model who represented the predicted motions. This rendering shows the high similarity of movements in six degrees of freedom.

This project is based on Siport21 measurement campaign carried out over 4 moored vessels at the port of Punta Langosteira. The data obtained in this campaign were used to characterize the behaviour of the moored ships in six degrees of freedom.
