16 Stowaways On Cargo Ship Detained After They Jumped Into The Ocean
Federal authorities have been investigating a group of about 16 migrants who were stowaways on a cargo vessel headed toward Puerto Rico and jumped into the ocean as it came close to the US territory on Tuesday.
The incident took place in San Juan Bay and was recorded by onlookers as all, but two migrants were hurled into the water and were rescued by the US Coast Guard.
Two migrants who were on the cargo vessel were also detained, Jeffrey Quiñones, the spokesman for US Customs and Border Protection, informed The Associated Press.
The cargo vessel departed from Jacksonville in Florida, but the officials suspect that the migrants may have scrambled on board the ship in waters close to the
Dominican Republic on abandoning a boat in that area, Quiñones mentioned.
Authorities hadn’t been able to determine where the migrants had come from or why they had reportedly jumped into the water, but he said they were in stable condition.
