World’s Biggest Cruise Ship
The World’s Biggest Cruise Ship is the Royal Caribbean’s ‘Icon of the Seas’, which became operational on January 27, 2024, when she sailed out of Port Miami. It is also the lead ship of the Icon class, with a gross tonnage of 248,663 tonnes.
Her naming ceremony caught many eyes since the famous soccer player Lionel Messi christened the ship.
The ship is 364.75 m long, 48.47 m wide, and 196 feet above the waterline. It has a 9.25 m draft and 20 decks, 18 of which are passenger decks.
The biggest cruise ship has 2805 rooms, including 276 ocean view rooms, 1405 balconies and 179 suites. It can accommodate 5610 guests at double occupancy and has a crew of 2350.
The USD 2 billion cruise ship built by Meyer Turku took around 900 days to complete.
It has been designed as a floating resort at sea and has 8 distinct neighbourhoods including:
- Thrill Island: This has the Category 6 waterpark, Crown’s Edge (a skywalk), FlowRider surf simulator, mini golf course, and rock climbing space.
- Chill Island: It is home to 4 of the ship’s 7 pools.
- Surfside: this was made for young families, with Water’s Edge Pool and Splashaway Bay, Baby Bay, an arcade, and a carousel.
- Central Park: It is a peaceful oasis with over 20,000 real plants.
- AquaDome: A major attraction with stunning screens, next-gen robotics, and a dynamic waterfall.
- The Hideaway: An adults-only beach club with the first suspended infinity pool at sea, tiered lounge space, hot tubs, and a champagne bar.
- The Royal Promenade: This includes 15+ restaurants, bars, lounges, and entertainment venues, including ocean views and the Pearl, a dynamic art installation.
- Suite Neighborhood: Just a few steps away from the rooms, VIP guests can enjoy upscale amenities exclusively for suite guests. There is a grove suite sun deck, a private pool hot tub and two VIP restaurants.
The largest cruise ship has the largest waterpark at sea with 6 waterslides, including the first open free-fall slide named Pressure Drop. There are also 7 pools and 9 whirlpools.
The cruise ship offers 40 dining venues, from casual eateries to fine dining experiences including Empire Supper Club, Pearl Cafe and The Grove.
For entertainment, the guests can enjoy Broadway-style shows in the theatre, acrobatic performances in the Aquadome with live music, comedy clubs and a majestic waterfall.
Icon of the Seas is environmentally sustainable as well. It is powered by LNG, has advanced waste management and is energy efficient, thanks to LED lighting, smart HVAC systems and water conservation systems.
Icon of the Seas offers year-round 7-night cruises from Miami, Florida, visiting several Caribbean destinations like CocoCay, Bahamas, which is Royal Caribbean’s private island, Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico, Basseterre in St. Kitts, Roatan Island, Honduras and Philipsburg in St. Maarten.
