5 Largest Vessels In The World Launched in 2019

In the year 2019, the maritime industry saw the launch of some of the most impressive vessels which are also currently the largest in the world in their type.

Let’s take a look at some of the top launches made in the industry this year.

World’s Largest Plug-in Hybrid Vessel

The world’s largest Plug-in Hybrid Vessel was launched in mid of 2019. The vessel is capable of carrying 2,000 passengers and 500 cars. It combines four conventional Rolls-Royce Bergen B33:45L in-line diesel engines with electric propulsion.

Color Hybrid’s battery offers approximately 5 MWh and can operate for up to 60 minutes at speeds up to 12 knots. The vessel operates under battery power in the coastal areas outside of Sandefjord to reduce emissions as it comes into port.

Color Hybrid introduces new solutions to reduce noise and emissions. The vessel is a plug-in hybrid can be charged with environmentally friendly power from shore power in Sandefjord. The vessel will go silently in and out of the fjord of Sandefjord without emissions of harmful environmental gases, or nitrogen and sulfur compounds to air in the area.

World’s Largest 23,000 TEU LNG-Powered Container Ship

The CMA CGM Group announced the launching of the world’s largest containership (23,000 TEU,  400 metres long and 61 metres wide) CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) in September 2019.

The first vessel in this new class of 23,000-TEU LNG-powered containerships, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE is equipped with a smart system to manage ventilation for the reefer containers carried in the hold.

To further improve the environmental performance of the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE and her sisterships, their hull forms have been hydrodynamically optimised. The bulb has been seamlessly integrated into the hull profile and the bow is straight. The propeller and rudder blade have also been improved, along with the Becker Twisted Fin®.

World’s Largest And Most Efficient Stainless Steel Chemical Tankers

In July 2019, Odfjell named The World’s Largest And Most Efficient Stainless Steel Chemical Tankers.

These 49,000 dwt vessels are the world’s largest stainless steel chemical tankers.

These ships carry some 600 different chemicals and liquids which are used to produce a multitude of products we depend on in our everyday life; from phones and PC’s to medicines, fabrics and cooking oil.

World’s Largest Universal Nuclear-Powered Icebreaker Vessel

ROSATOM, Russia’s nuclear energy giant, launched the nuclear-powered arctic ice breaker ‘Ural’ in May 2019.

With the launch, the company completed another step towards ensuring all-year-round navigability of the Northern Sea Route (NSR).

The 173 metre-long ‘Ural’ is equipped with two highly efficient and compact RITM-200 nuclear reactors on board, capable of generating up to 350

MW combined, allowing the ship to break through ice as thick as 3 meters. The cutting edge RITM-200 type reactor makes its world debut on the ‘Ural’ as well as on its sister vessels from the 22220 projects, the ‘Arktik’ and the ‘Sibir’ before ROSATOM deploys it in floating and landlocked nuclear power plants.

World’s Largest Container Ship

The world’s largest containership was delivered to the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) fin July 2019.

Named MSC Gulsun, the 400-meter-long containership was delivered three weeks ahead of schedule.

With a width of 61.5 meters and a height of 33.2 meters, the unit can carry 23,756 20ft containers and represents the largest vessel built for the container shipping industry to date.

It is equipped with a next-generation smart dispensing system and exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers).

The vessel is equipped with more than 2,000 refrigerated containers, boosting the trade of food, drink, pharmaceutical and other chilled and frozen items between Asia and Europe.
