World’s Largest Suction Sail System To Be Installed On General Cargo Vessel
Amasus, a European maritime leader, has signed a new deal to install the world’s largest suction sail system on a general cargo vessel, working with Spanish firm bound4blue.
By mid-2025, the 22-meter eSAIL® unit will be retrofitted on a 90-meter, 2,876 dwt vessel at Spain’s Astander Shipyard, marking the biggest suction sail ever on a cargo ship.
This decision follows the success of Amasus’s first suction sails on the Eems Traveller in 2023, where the sails’ 17-meter units greatly boosted propulsion, reduced emissions, and cut costs.
Impressed by the results, Amasus saw clear benefits and moved forward with this second contract, showcasing its commitment to sustainable shipping.
Third-party validation by Lloyd’s Register for the eSAIL® system is nearly complete, with data on its fuel efficiency and emissions reductions expected soon.
Bound4blue’s CEO, José Miguel, says the new deal with Amasus proves the system’s reliability and affordability, with more shipowners expected to adopt wind-assisted propulsion.
Bound4blue is rapidly growing, with agreements signed in the past year with major players like Louis Dreyfus Company and Eastern Pacific Shipping, marking a major push for sustainable shipping.
The eSAIL® technology is DNV-approved, making it compatible with various vessel types and helping shipowners meet sustainability regulations like the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).
