World’s First Hydrogen-hybrid Research Vessel Design Receives AiP

California Coastal Research Vessel (CCRV) is the world’s first hydrogen-hybrid research vessel approved by the American Bureau of Shipping!

Glosten designed this revolutionary vessel for UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, advancing zero-emission maritime operations.

The CCRV features a hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system, enabling 75% of its journeys to be emissions-free, especially in state waters.

Equipped with modern diesel generators, the CCRV can handle extended offshore missions efficiently and cleanly.

This innovation supports California’s goal to reduce climate risk and transition to a carbon-neutral economy, aligning with the University of California’s climate objectives.

The CCRV will investigate critical issues like atmospheric rivers, fisheries, algal blooms, ocean acidification, El Nino storms, and sea-level rise.

The CCRV exemplifies the potential of hydrogen-powered vessels in sustainable maritime research and education, paving the way for a greener future.
