Vattenfall to Build Germany’s Most Powerful Wind Farm

Vattenfall is set to build Germany’s largest offshore wind farm—Nordlicht 1. With construction starting in 2026, this project marks a major step in the country’s clean energy transition.

Together, Nordlicht 1 and 2 will have a massive 1.6 GW capacity, generating 6 TWh of electricity annually—enough to power 1.6 million German homes.

Vattenfall has repurchased BASF’s 49% stake in the project, but BASF will still secure long-term renewable energy to support its chemical production in Europe.

The wind farms will feature 112 Vestas turbines, each with a 15 MW capacity. These advanced turbines will play a key role in making Germany’s energy sector greener.

A key innovation—wind turbine towers made from low-emission steel—will cut carbon emissions by 16%, significantly lowering the project’s environmental impact.

Nordlicht is more than just another wind farm. It represents a major push toward fossil-free energy and industrial decarbonization in Germany and beyond.

By 2028, Nordlicht 1 and 2 will be fully operational, accelerating Germany’s clean energy future and setting new standards for offshore wind power!
