UK’s Largest Container Port: Inside London Gateway’s £1 Billion Expansion
DP World has announced a £1 billion expansion plan for London Gateway, set to make it the UK’s largest container port within five years, revolutionizing UK trade.
The expansion will add two more berths, increasing the total to six, allowing London Gateway to handle the world’s largest container ships, transforming the country’s trade capabilities.
A second rail terminal will be built to accommodate the growing flow of goods, boosting the efficiency of the UK’s supply chain and reducing congestion at ports.
Once completed, the 2.5-kilometer-long quayside will be able to dock six 400-meter-long vessels simultaneously, supported by Europe’s tallest quay cranes, towering as high as Big Ben.
This project will create 400 new permanent jobs, adding to the 1,200 already employed at the port, contributing to the economic growth of South Essex.
London Gateway is a critical part of the UK’s global trade network, handling nearly 2 million TEU annually, with the expansion allowing for even greater volumes of international trade.
DP World’s investment of £3 billion into London Gateway reflects the company's confidence in the UK’s role as a key global logistics hub, ensuring stronger trade connections.
As London Gateway becomes the UK’s largest container port, it will strengthen supply chains and solidify the UK’s position in global commerce, marking a new era of growth.
