U.S. Navy’s Littoral Combat Ships Armed with Hellfire Missiles
The U.S. Navy has upgraded the USS Indianapolis with radar-guided Hellfire missiles, making it the first Freedom-class Littoral Combat Ship to counter drones at sea.
These enhancements modify the Surface-to-Surface Missile Module (SSMM), extending its capabilities to target surface, land, and aerial threats.
Triggered by recent drone incidents in the Red Sea, the Navy ensures these upgrades meet the fleet’s demands with cutting-edge agility and precision.
Each Hellfire missile, guided by radar, autonomously locks onto and destroys its target, offering a cost-effective alternative to the Navy’s high-priced RAM missiles.
The USS Indianapolis is now a pioneer, earning the Combat Action Ribbon and setting the stage for the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul to receive similar upgrades in 2025.
The Navy is also exploring the next-generation AGM-179A JAGM missile, aiming to create a stronger shield against explosive-laden drones and boats.
These advancements redefine maritime warfare, positioning Freedom-class ships as versatile defenders in contested environments worldwide.
