U.S. First Wind Turbine Installation Vessel Sets Sail
Charybdis, the first U.S.-built wind turbine installation vessel, has begun sea trials. This marks a major step in advancing America’s offshore wind industry.
Built with over 14,000 tons of domestic steel, the 472-foot-long vessel will play a key role in constructing the massive Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project.
The CVOW project, now halfway complete, will generate 2.6 gigawatts of clean energy—enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.
Dominion Energy, overseeing the project, highlights its impact on job creation and economic growth, with thousands of American jobs already generated.
Charybdis can install turbines of 12 megawatts or more and will operate from Hampton Roads, Virginia—a strategic offshore wind hub.
Despite costs rising to $10.7 billion, Dominion Energy ensures affordability, with only a minor increase in residential electricity bills.
Once operational, Charybdis will complete the world’s largest lift—23,000 tons—solidifying its role in the future of U.S. offshore wind energy.
