The world’s largest catamaran ferry, Express 5, has struck the Ronne Harbour breakwater—its third allision since 2023.
Passengers heard a loud crash as the ferry scraped its starboard side on the narrow breakwater. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The damage to the aluminium hull is severe, requiring repairs in drydock. Investigations are underway to determine the cause.
This isn’t the first mishap for Express 5. In June 2023, it drifted into a dock due to high winds while moored at Ronne.
And in May 2023, it misjudged its approach at Ystad, hitting a barge. The captain faced negligence charges for this incident.
In early 2024, Express 5 also experienced two blackouts, further raising concerns about its reliability.
Built to dominate Baltic waters, Express 5 carries 1,625 passengers and 450 cars—but its service is now on hold yet again.
