SS United States: From Ocean Liner to World’s Largest Artificial Reef

The iconic SS United States, known for its record-breaking transatlantic journeys, is set to become the world’s largest artificial reef.

Okaloosa County, Florida, has signed a tentative agreement to acquire the ship, transforming it into a reef for divers and marine life.

Launched in 1951, the SS United States transported celebrities, heads of state, and immigrants, but it has been docked at a Philadelphia pier for years.

A U.S. District Court ordered the ship’s removal due to unpaid dockage fees, prompting the nonprofit owner to explore alternatives.

Despite efforts to preserve it, conservationists chose to transform the ship into a reef rather than see it destroyed.

Okaloosa County expects the reef to draw divers from around the world, generating millions in tourism revenue for local businesses.

The project will cost over $10 million, involving environmental cleanup, relocation, and sinking of the vessel.

The ship will be accessible to divers of all skill levels, making it a unique destination for history and marine enthusiasts.
