Legendary SS United States to Become World’s Largest Artificial Reef
The iconic SS United States, once a symbol of American transatlantic travel, is set to embark on its final journey from Philadelphia on November 14.
After nearly three decades docked at Pier 82, the legendary liner will make its way to Florida’s Gulf Coast to become the world’s largest artificial reef.
After nearly three decades docked at Pier 82, the legendary liner will make its way to Florida’s Gulf Coast to become the world’s largest artificial reef.
The journey will be meticulously planned, with six tugboats guiding the 1,000-foot-long ship away from the pier at high tide for a temporary stop at Pier 80.
The following day, the SS United States will begin its voyage through the Delaware River, passing under key bridges that will momentarily close to accommodate this historic passage.
Two tugs will then escort the ship along the East Coast to Mobile, Alabama, where the vessel will undergo a year-long transformation.
In Alabama, the SS United States will be prepped as a reef by removing pollutants and non-metal components, ensuring environmental standards are met.
As part of the transformation, the ship’s red, white, and blue funnels and significant artefacts will be preserved for display in a future museum.
The SS United States Conservancy has announced a museum in Destin-Fort Walton Beach to honor the ship’s legacy, where visitors can experience its remarkable history firsthand.
