China’s First Hydrogen Fuel Cell River Container Ship Launched

China makes a monumental stride in green maritime technology, launching its first hydrogen fuel cell river container ship to reduce inland shipping emissions.

Named Dong Fang Qing Gang, this ship features the largest hydrogen fuel cell system ever deployed on a Chinese vessel, revolutionizing eco-friendly transport.

Powered by two 240 kW hydrogen fuel cells and a 550 kg hydrogen storage system, it offers a remarkable 235-mile range.

With a capacity of 64 TEU or 1,450 tonnes and a length of 64.9 meters, this vessel showcases cutting-edge design and efficiency.

The innovative power system combines hydrogen storage with a lithium battery—a groundbreaking integration for shipping technology.

Launched in Zhejiang Province, the hull marks the beginning of a rigorous testing phase. The ship’s first operational demonstrations are set for 2025.

This vessel is part of China’s broader push into green innovation, including battery-powered ships and electrification systems aimed at transforming the industry.
